Freezing Fun!

It was a chilly Friday afternoon on the date chosen for Sam and Avery’s engagement shoot, and a lot of what we had in mind was outdoors… The plan was to hit a few spots with specific characteristics on the way to an evening dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, Zazio’s. We strolled through downtown Kalamazoo, pausing here and there and chatting as we went along. They enjoyed coats for the first while… then it was time for the bridge and sunset shots. No coats and cold, cutting gusts of air. Braving the initial bite of the winter wind as they stepped from the comfort of the car, and then shaking off the icy blanket of air that eventually just enveloped, they felt the “Florida sun”… long enough to get the shots. The bridge was the worst. When we did the field shots the lesser wind was balanced by the fact that they were in t-shirts. It’s making me cold remembering it. But it was a lot of fun and we enjoyed learning about Sam’s East Hampton proposal that wasn’t exactly according to plan, but just spectacularly sweet and thoughtful. Avery was interning in NYC and since the ring didn’t arrive in time for Sam’s departure to visit Avery, he proposed with a beautiful ring that had belonged to Avery’s grandmother, creating another layer of awesome in their engagement memories:)
We’ve learned enough about this couple to be inspired by them and their approach to life. To see that they’re not just gorgeous on the outside. They are thoughtful and generous . Thankful and unselfish. Energetic and funloving. They act to improve the world around them by positively impacting the lives of people around them, both inside their daily sphere and in the greater community. As I remember the time we spent with them, it makes me smile. It was very relaxed, like a few hours with good friends. I think that’s really what it was. Anyway, they’re great and we couldn’t help but have a really wonderful time.
The sunset photos could have drawn the shades on a good shoot, but there was more in store. They treated us to an absolutely awesome meal at the chef’s table at Zazio’s! Chef John Korycki created so much excellent food that I started to wonder if I’d even be able to move when it was over. Pecorinos and freshly rolled pastas. Vino and dessert. The best! As we ate, we enjoyed background on the foods being prepared and the region they originated from. I can’t think of a better meal.
We got a few shots around the restaurant afterwards, the staff was even nice enough to allow us into the kitchen for some. It was a great, great afternoon and evening and we’re excited to show you Sam and Avery’s engagement photos!

Favorites from conversation during the session: “It’s like socks on my teeth.” “It’s like licking mustard off of carpet.” and use of the word “mugician,” which I think should be added to the dictionary because it’s apt and concise.

Hey Good Lookin’…

We had a great Saturday afternoon shoot with Bobby and Katie in Valparaiso for their engagement. We headed to the local grocery to pick up a few things for an afternoon in the kitchen preparing a meal. The adorable kid you’ll see below is their son, Sam and he’s actually even cuter in person. It’s not difficult to see where he got his looks. Both of his parents are beautiful. These two have been together for a very long time and it was really nice to experience their dynamic a bit as they chopped, boiled, sipped, cooked, and fed Layla a few bites. As neat as it was to shoot them cooking, it was the last few shots that were the most fun and showed the most about this family. Katie and Sam sat on the porch swing as Bobby played guitar and sang to them. It was touching to see how comfortably they slid into this family posture. Quite clearly these moments are some of the sweetest bits holding this family tight.
It was a very natural, easy shoot and just makes us look forward even more to the time we’ll get to spend with them in June, photographing their vintage/rustic barn celebration!

Two great details. First, Bobby built the island that you see in their kitchen as a gift for Katie. And, second, the guitar Bobby is playing was a gift from his mother and was her first guitar.
This family has a natural, honestly easygoing vibe, completely uncontrived and a tremendous pleasure to be around and we love them!

Vintage Day Trip!

We spent an afternoon with Chan, Tracy, and Kendal back in the Fall to shoot engagement photos for Chan and Tracy’s upcoming June wedding. It was clear from the moment we met up with them at Goshen Municipal Airport that it was going to be an awesome shoot because they had nailed their outfits and the vintage car they brought was also perfect! The attire suited them so well and the shots came off absolutely beautifully. From the casual afternoon walk with a break to play some cards and make some family video memories, to the trip by car (complete with breakdown), to the airport to lift off for a new adventure, we had loads of fun with this awesome couple and some of their family!
When we first met to start the shoot, we were aware that we might end up working with/around some precipitation, but it was surprising the precipitation that we ended up seeing. Just as we returned to the airport to get the plane shots, it began to rain/snow/hail, and we decided that we’d go for a light lunch at South Side Soda Shop. After an enjoyable meal and easy conversation we headed back and without much further delay were able to get some great shots to wrap up the story. We had an extraordinary time with these wonderful people and are especially thankful for the patience of their family as the shoot took longer than initially anticipated. We also are super excited for their wedding in June for several reasons. First of course because they’re such cool people and we know it will be awesome! And also because their reception will be held at the Old Bag Factory here in Goshen, so we’ll get to see the improvements they’ve made since we photographed Kyle and Taleasha‘s wedding there in 2010. Chan’s heritage is Cambodian and we look forward to experiencing some great Cambodian elements in the celebration as well as when we travel to Cambodia with them to capture some of their honeymoon trip!!! And as an added bonus we’ll get to work with Cher and the great people of Merry Me Events again!

One other very cool piece of side information is that the plane in the photos was built by Chan’s grandfather in his basement!

Bambino!

On a very cold late fall day we had an exciting experience photographing our editor and her husband as they anticipated the arrival of their first child in the days to follow. Janie had a very specific idea in mind for their shoot and the Rifes were excited about it and found the perfect things to wear to pull it off. Their dedication to the shoot was awesome! It was so cold and they were very lightly dressed, but they powered through it, delivering the perfect expressions and not showing how frigid it was. We had a lot of fun and were able to wrap the shoot and get them out of the cold in a timely fashion. We’re extremely happy with the photos and hope you enjoy them as well. Dedicated ~~stalkers~~ followers will recognize them from their Benjamin Button anniversary shoot last October which is when we first got to know them:)

Patrick and Allison…

…decided to tie the knot on a perfect Saturday in mid-October at an out of the way spot called Heston Hills in picturesque northwest Indiana. From the first moments of meeting Pat and his friends as they hung out chatting and throwing the pigskin in the yard, there was no mistaking Pat’s nervous excitement each time his mind came back to what this day would hold. It was cool to see. His shaky hands and voice were a sweet reminder of just how big this day was. Their day was so packed full of cool stuff!

We stayed in New Buffalo just across the state line and had decided that we’d like to capture the sunrise, so I rose at about 6am to get ready and head to a good spot I’d chosen the night before. It was a brisk fall morning and there was a threat of rain in the morning atmosphere. I got the footage before heading back toward the hotel. On the way I realized that because the hotel was in Michigan and the rest of the day’s activities would be taking place in Indiana, we actually had an extra hour to get things together. We met Allison at her Mom’s home to pick up her dress and get a few shots of it before Janie was to meet all of the ladies at the salon in LaPorte. After dropping Janie there, I ran a series of errands and did some planned supplemental shooting before it was time to head off to meet Patrick and the guys in New Buffalo at the vacation rental where the guys would be getting ready. Some hot tubbing went on, one early fall run (the officiant is a good friend) some fire-building, and a fair amount of football-tossing. It was a pretty relaxed atmosphere, but bright threads of anticipation were woven into the midday activities as well. After the final attempt at hitting the trash can with a pass from across the yard, it was time to head back inside to shave and get dressed. Pat is such a great person and it was a really sweet thing to see how genuinely nervous he was. It was the kind of groom’s story that I’ve often heard guys talk about, but I think it was the first time that I’ve actually witnessed it so unmistakably in person. Once prepared, we headed out to Heston.

The soon to be Cailleses had decided to share a private moment prior to the wedding to calm their nerves and exchange gifts and we of course got to be there to photograph it! These are two of the sweetest people in the world!!! Their gifts were so much more than just the obvious beauty of each. They had a story behind them and represented a great deal of thought and attention to detail. Just another highlight of the love between them. Pat gave Allison a gorgeous ring with an amazing sapphire and Allison had purchased a Cartier watch for Pat that he’s been wanting for a couple of years! It was a very emotional first see! Just. plain. awesome.

As their moments drew to a close, nerves calmed, guests had begun arriving and it was time for the wedding to get started. They had a friend who had agreed to sing for them in the ceremony and she sounded amazing! The moment drew near and then it was time. Allison walked toward Patrick on her father’s arm. They shared beautiful vows and a quick message from a close friend who was asked to officiate, and then we all met the latest, greatest, Cailles!

After some photos in the area, we returned for the reception and party. It was a very beautifully decorated room, the food was delicious, and the mingling, dancing, and fun were all second to none! There were multiple toasts to the character of both Pat and Allison, to an extent we’ve not experienced before. This just served to confirm what we’d come to suspect in our meetings and engagement shoot with the two of them-that they’re GREAT PEOPLE who had found the absolute best person to spend their life with!

Pat flawlessly pulled off one of the greatest reception activities that we’ve ever photographed or captured video of. He sang Zac Brown Band’s “Free” and it was absolutely awesome. Allison had no idea that he’d been practicing, and it was yet another example of the extraordinary nature of this love. As the evening wore on, the music and dancing only intensified. Young and old shared the same enthusiasm. Old friends caught up on new happenings. New acquaintances made memories and set the foundation for possible future friendship. All beneath a bright moon and a flowing sea of wispy, sometimes billowy clouds and set to the sounds of a wonderful band and the warmth of love, food and drink. Pat and Allison’s wedding was totally perfect, because they are absolutely perfect together!

Wedding Ring

Well, I thought I’d stop by and show and tell you guys a personal story of mine. Now I’m not even going to pretend this is going to be well said or wrote. So prepare yourself…this is not John writing
On the way home from dinner about 6 months into dating, John stopped by Meijer and made me stay in the car. When he came out he had a loaf of bread. When asked, he was being all secret about it. Sometime down the road he pulled into a (Goshen) park. Parked the car and leaned over and just whispered in my ear, “will you marry me?”. After about a min in a half of crying he took my head in his hands and yelled “is this a yes?” lol Shouting YES! he took my finger and slid a handmade bread tie ring on my finger. I wore this through the engagement until I got a diamond ring, then the band and happy ever after. The tie was always more important to me then the diamond. So when we started talking about renewing our vows…it just seem fitting to redo my ring. Plus, I’m not a diamond girl and with work it kept getting caught on the brides dress. So. The search for a good jeweler came about. It “only” took 13 months going through “we can’t do that” or it’ll be $, to find Rita at Fiebig Jewelry in Sturgis, MI. I wasn’t about to settle for anything but what I wanted Rita was amazing. Listened..gave ideas and didn’t treat me crazy for what I wanted. What did I want? A replica of my bread tie:) I didn’t care if its gold or not. It was about lasting and the meaning. I also wanted something of my old ring. So I had a small stone from my old ring put in on the inside center. I now have it…wearing it… and smiling every time I look down. In short. I love my husband.

Joe and Michelle…

are two amazing, beautiful, smart and fun people! I’m biased, but I doubt that there’s anyone who knows them even a little that would disagree! They got together with their families at the Farmhouse in Nappanee on a beautiful, warm Saturday in October to confirm their commitment to each other in front of all those they love! They were excited to start a new life together without trips back home to sleep apart in the evenings and facebooking because they hadn’t seen each other in a few days. The months between their engagement and the wedding went by so fast that as I was getting into the car to meet the guys at the Luxe Cafe for Joe’s one last bachelor breakfast, it only just began to really hit me. This might be a good time to mention that Joe is my brother and I was the photographer for the getting ready part of the day and best man for the rest of the day:) I love the fact that throughout the entire wedding day, Joe was relaxed and excited, but mostly just happy.

As the guys met for breakfast, Michelle and the ladies’ morning at the Miller house rolled on as Laura did their hair and then Brenda (Michelle’s sister who is a brand new mom:) did makeup. Once the dolling was mostly complete, the girls all made the trip to the Farmhouse where they finished getting ready and then met up with us for pictures.

After a tasty breakfast, the guys made a couple of stops before coming over to our place to hang out a little bit before getting ready. Joe gave each of us an awesome pair of striped socks which was cool. I was particularly happy to wear the watch he had given me at the rehearsal dinner and the rest of the gang was equally happy to employ the flasks which he had given each of them. I took care of a few last minute decoration details during hangout time, and afterwards we all got dressed and headed for the Farmhouse. When we were roughly halfway there, Joe called to ask if I had remembered to grab the bouttanieres from above the fridge, which I had not, so Tyler went back after them while we went ahead. Janie designed and made the bouttanieres, bouquets, and many of the centerpieces and to not have the bouttanieres would have meant certain exile for me!

Upon arriving, Joe made his way to a quiet little spot where he waited for Michelle so they could share a quiet minute or two to say hi and admire each other’s beautiful-ness! Michelle was of course gorgeous and Joe the perfect amount of handsome and comfortable. I love their style and the way they are together. This is when it really hit me that my little brother was getting married. And I’m so glad that Michelle came into his life! Wow. Since this is about them and their wedding day and not how proud I am of him and them, I will leave it at that:)

Michelle came up behind him and embraced him and they found a quiet pocket of moments before the sea of picture time, wedding and reception celebrations swallowed them up and carried them away to the sunny Arizona sands.

We took photos at a few places and wrapped up the photos at the Farmhouse before the guests started arriving and the ceremony drew nigh.

After Joe asked Michelle to marry him and they started the process of planning this day, Joe had come to the realization that the one person he most wanted to marry them was our father. When Dad responded that he didn’t feel that he could do it, Joe and Michelle considered the options, but in the end still felt strongly enough to ask Dad another time and Dad had considered further and agreed to take the necessary steps to allow him to conduct the ceremony and to be the one to marry them!

It wasn’t long before the seats filled and it was time to get the ceremony under way. And then it wasn’t long before Joe and Michelle were sharing a kiss and Dad was announcing Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Yoder! Michelle was dancing the second her feet hit the grass:)

The newlyweds dismissed their guests by row to make sure they didn’t miss saying hello to anyone and invited each one to enjoy some fresh fruit from Kercher’s as a pre-reception treat or to take home for later. After a few family photos, they were announced into the reception and the party officially got started!

Dinner was an amazing, delicious haystack made by Michelle’s mom, Nettie! It was the perfect meal idea for the setting and overall feel of the wedding, just like the cupcakes instead of a traditional cake. After dinner and dessert, some enjoyed playing CornHole/ Bag Toss and LadderBall while others hit the dance floor right away. It was pretty chill. After a while it was time for toasting and even though I didn’t say nearly all of what I planned to, Becky kept it on-point with her speech and everyone offered their best wishes/ raised their glasses to Joe and Michelle and a happy, beautiful future! It was a fantastic day! Michelle brings out the best in Joe and she is a wonderful person that I’m proud to call my sister-in-law! Love you guys!!!

Valuable Legs, the TD Wagon, and the Perfect Smile!

It was an early evening Wednesday and we were preparing to shoot Skyler’s senior photos. It had been raining off and on with varying intensity all day, so we were excited when the radar appeared to indicate that the showers were finally gone… But, in the 30 minutes leading up to the start time it rained cats and dogs! So, we decided to begin with an awesome indoor location that we love. A couple of things were clear right away. First, Skyler was going to be a breeze to shoot, and second, it was good that it rained because the shots we were starting with were setting a perfect tone. By the time we left the indoors, the rain had slowed to a drizzle with only occasional showers that seemed to synchronize with our driving time until it quit completely as the session wrapped up. At the second location we got a bit better idea of the amazing value and capability of the pair of legs carrying this girl. Enough blue ribbons and medals to fill a grocery sack! And we’re not talking about elementary track and field day. We’re talking about 3 years of high school meets and national competitions. By the end of this year I’m sure there’ll be an entire battery of new ones added to her loot. We knew she was busy because of the difficulty scheduling the shoot, but this brought a little more clarity to why that was. She’s also an exceptional hoopster and fütballer, we hear. We shot with umbrellas, without umbrellas, without shoes, with wind, but pretty much always with smiles. Skyler’s got one of those million dollar smiles that just makes you smile to see it. She was a trooper all the way through, without regard for the sometimes rainy shots or the wet weeds and grass shots and it made the entire time light and fun. We ended with a fun night shot that we really love on the front end of our new (to us) TD Wagon. It was a really great shoot and we loved getting to meet and work with Skyler (and Brenda;) and we’re excited to show you her senior session!

Country Casual…

…with an idyllic mix of rustic and vintage is how we would characterize Adam & Jessie’s wedding celebration at Millcreek Barn. From the moment we first arrived, we fell in love with the charm of this gorgeous barn and the land on which it is situated. The aesthetics are fantastic. Adam and Jessie were making the last minute preparations and then running through their dress rehearsal as we took a few minutes to look around and attempt to take it all in.

Then, on Friday we set about capturing some great aspects and details of the property as the final pieces were being put into their places. Janie stayed with Jessie in the quaint little bridal studio that at some point long ago appears to have served as a coop for some type of fowl. This spot is the perfect example of why this venue is so cool. There’s no pretension. What was once a house for birds has now been repurposed beautifully for bridal use without destroying the affect of the building with its setting. As Jessie and the bridesmaids set about the final steps of their beautification process, Adam and the gentlemen undertook their transformations in the men’s. They are a close group and it was an enjoyable atmosphere despite smallness of the space.

When the last cowboy boot had been pulled on and the last bowtie secured, the guys shared laughs, stories and apples before Adam and Jessie had their first see and a few private moments. Then, we took advantage of the terrific country setting and got some shots with the entire bridal party and some with just Adam and Jessie. This duo is a very country and very truck-loving pair and we really dug the way the photos were turning out despite the early rain showers. The light was wonderful and spirits were high which made the photo time extra-fun!

When we returned to the barn, it was a short wait as guests arrived and were ushered to their seats in the lawn beside the barn. Before we knew it, Adam was standing tall in front waiting for his bride-to-be to step from around the corner and make her way down the aisle toward him and a new life as husband and wife. The air was charged with anticipation and excitement for the moments to follow and for how beautiful Jessie looked as she strode toward Adam, arm in arm with her dad.

After a concise ceremony, beautiful words full of joy and exhortation, we were thrilled to be introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Weaver for the first time ever anywhere! After the couple had dismissed each of their guests personally, everyone was invited to enjoy appetizers and mingle while the family took photos together. Once each guest had found their seat and it was time to kick off the reception, the wedding party and the brand new Weavers were announced and the party was underway!

The toasts were perfect and Jessie’s dad gave a touching speech before saying a prayer to bless the meal. A cool thing to note here is that Jessie’s father owns Victorian Pantry which catered the meal for Adam and Jessie! The food was wonderful and the wait staff was fantastic:)

As the evening waxed late, the dancing increased, the bouquet and garter were tossed, and memories were revisited and new ones made to revisit another day. At the end of the night, we felt like it had been a full, fantastic day and that the world was one couple richer than it had been!

We aimed our camera at the sky and captured the evening moon, stars and clouds before departing happier than we had come, excited to review all of the day’s beautiful memories.

One further thing that we found perfectly befitting this couple’s style: in the morning before he made his way to the barn, Adam had worked on Jessie’s old blue truck, fixing a few things long needed as his gift to his bride. An everyday task on an anything but everyday sort of day. Very befitting of this affable, unpretentious couple who have an effortless cool to them. We hope you enjoy a peek into Adam and Jessie’s beautiful wedding day as much as we enjoyed photographing it:)

PJ and Ardith, On a September Sunday…

…said their “I do’s” at the Morris Theatre in South Bend. A day after their Sikh ceremony, full of rich colors and traditions, they hosted along with their families, an equally vibrant celebration in the western tradition. This couple is the absolute essence of easy chique and their backgrounds in fashion, Ardith is a designer for Loft and PJ is a project manager for Macy’s, shone brightly in all aspects of their wedding day. Two of the particularly cool things about this wedding were that the boutonnieres were designed by PJ and Ardith hand-picked each of her bridesmaids’ dresses to each girl. These are just a couple of small examples of the talents that this pair has. Their tastes keep pace perfectly with their own perfection as people. From the Ferragamo shoes and immaculately tailored suits to the totally gorgeous Vera Wang dress and perfect custom bridesmaids’ dresses, this was an amazing, beyond exceptional celebration. PJ is tall, dark, and handsome. Not to mention intelligent, kind, and articulate. Ardith possesses the same three character traits and is a magnetic blend of delicate and statuesque, stunning yet modest. And the friends comprising their wedding party were also beautiful, vivacious individuals. From the start of the day as the hair and makeup got underway and the guys were pressing shirts and grabbing a bite, it was clear that it would be a great day. It was relaxed in 702 as PJ finished writing his vows in his moleskin and sent Ardith flowers before pinning the boutonnieres and then beginning his grooming and dressing. All through the morning I could see that PJ was balancing his excitement perfectly and enjoying all of the steps leading up to the moment when he would see Ardith coming down the aisle. He was effortless and unflappable. Ardith was the same with an added measure of excitement to smile at in the months and years to come. As the morning brought us to midday and then early afternoon, everyone was looking totally gorgeous. Ardith met PJ in the upstairs of the Morris lobby in front of the windows where they marveled at each other and shared a quiet moment before everything really got kicked off. After their bit of quiet, we jetted here and there for some photos with them and their party. A huge thanks to Gabrielle Thompson and Beth Anne Anderson for their huge contributions on this day!!! We returned to enjoy some beautiful string music as each attendant walked down the aisle and after a concise ceremony we were introduced to Mr and Mrs Prabhjot Singh and witnessed their first steps as husband and wife as they strolled easily back down the aisle. Congratulations with family and the wedding party was followed by some family photos and then the same beautiful strings from downstairs provided a soundtrack to the cocktail hour on the upper level. The reception itself was nothing short of awesome. The ballroom at the Palais Royale was even more spectacular than ever! Everything was elegant perfection from the flowers and decor to the lighting and food. The exquisite musical stylings of Hey Jimmy set the tone for a night of fun and dancing. And dance they did, one and all! There was cheesecake for dessert and even a birthday cake for Meredith, Ardith’s sister, who also surprised the couple with the announcement that their honeymoon would be in Hawaii! So much warmth and kindness came from both of these families. It was just tremendous to be around this group! There was so much wonder packed into this day that I have no doubt I’ve forgotten some of them, but I’m also certain that the photos will give you a great taste of just how incredible PJ and Ardith’s wedding day was!
